Hello everyone!
This past week at SJA the JK-3 students were introduced to Gymnastics as well as Yoga. In this new unit, we are focusing on balance, body movement, as well as the development of fine and gross motor skills.
The JK students practiced balancing while walking along a line and then were given the chance to walk on a balance beam (bench) and jump off of it.
The SK students really enjoyed walking along a balance beam as well as learning about the different gymnastics skills; pike, straddle, tuck, straight jump, and star jump. We played a version of Simon Says with these new skills and all the students seemed to really enjoy it!
The Grade 1's also learned the gymnastics skills, practiced balance and stability on balance beams, as well as participating in Yoga activities in the classroom while Christmas Concert rehearsals were taking place in the gym.
The Grade 2's enjoyed a team challenge I created for them to enhance their teamwork and communication skills as well as using upper body muscles, lower body muscles and their core. One student sat on a blue mat, while the rest of their team worked together to push them across the gym and back. We made this a friendly competition and all of the students had a lot of fun doing the activity.
The Grade 3's engaged in gymnastics circuits in the dome consisting of balance beam walks and dismounts, log rolls, bench jumps and bear walks. They also engaged in yoga from a YouTube channel called "Cosmic Kids" which allows students to perform yoga skills through a story.
